Here are the archived Books. To declutter the other pages of the site I am placing periodically my book reviews here. There will not be a tab on the menu bar instead there will be a link at the bottom of the Books page.
Hatchet, Brian's Winter, The River. I had never read these until this last winter. Gary Paulsen did a great job writing these. They capture the attention of a young reader and then as an older reader we go back and gain a new level of understanding and appreciation of his works.
The Lord of the Rings series, Gulliver's Travels, The Inheritance cycle, and Harry Potter. All of the authors of these four books are classified as Linguist. And they truly are. Look at the language they use. They don't stick with modern English. They created their own unique language. Elven, Lilliputian, The ancient language, and the language of magic. When I read these books I can't help but pay attention to the creativeness that each author is capable of. It enhances the fantasy and adventuresomeness of the book and story.
The Shipping News. I had to read a book for my AP lit and comp class and then write a 6 page paper on it. I choose this book for my independent read. I was so glad I did. The novel was fantastic. Proulx did a wonderful job with her syntax in particular. You can read all about it in my analysis paper. I definitely recommend this book.
The Mortal Instrument Series. This is such a great series. There is so much action and passion in the book. It is great for teens and young adults. So far there are 5 books in the series. I have read them all and each one has so much suspense that by the fifth book you aren't bored with them. I just finished the fifth book, and boy is it intense. It's starting to get a bit repetitive, but the action keeps moving the underlying plot along. I am hoping, however, that the 6th book will be the end of the series.
The Hunger Games. I know that this is all the hype out there now. The movie just came out and everybody is raving about the books. I thought I should take my turn as telling everybody how great this book is. I was supposed to read it three months ago when I got them for my sister but ended up not reading them until about two days ago. It took me about five hours in total to finish the book. I was captivated by the first chapter. I always judge a book by the first chapter and if I'm not hooked it goes back on the shelf. Not the case for this one. I was hooked. I was expecting it to be an action filled book but it was more of a mind strategy book mixed with love and action. Fantastic! I can't wait till I see the movie and read the other two books.
Immanuel's Veins. I'll talk more about this book after I complete Dracula but as I'm reading Dracula and looking back on this book Ted Dekker took his ideas from Dracula. The good vs. evil in the book is great and its not one of your typical vampire novels. I actually didn't realize that they were vampires until half way through the book (I probably would have known sooner if i read Dracula beforehand).
Frankenstein. This was a great book! It was one of the only assigned readings that I read all the way through for English class. It was so Romantic and descriptive. Mary Shelley's writing style made to feel for the monster one moment and side with Victor the next. She leaves the ending almost open ended. You know what happens but you also wonder if it was quick or if he suffered or if it was metaphorical. There are all the questions in you brain even though you know what happens. It's the little details that get to you and the Shelley brilliantly writes.
Dracula. It took me over 6 months to finally finish but I have to say that it was definitely worth it. The last 100 pages or so were really intense; I could not put the book down. Now that I finished reading it I understand all the literary references, and movies, and random things that people do that refer back to Dracula. For example, Immanuel's Veins is a Christian book based off of Dracula.
