It has always been my dream to travel. Ever since I was younger my grandma has shared story after story of her travels. When I had the opportunity to travel to Nigeria on a medical mission trip during the summer of 2011, I grabbed hold of that chance and went all in. I love the experience of being part of another culture. There is definitely something unique about living side by side with others and seeing how they do life. It is one thing to learn about cultures in the classroom, but to live that culture for a time is irreplaceable.
I think that I have a similar opportunity again with the chance to study abroad, live, and observe Dutch culture in the Netherlands. My major is nursing. In the health care field, we encounter people from various walks of life and many different cultures. I believe that the more opportunities I have to learn from others and gain experience hands on the better off I will be to serve those that I encounter. Traveling and studying in the Netherlands with SPICE will provide me with such an opportunity to broaden my horizon. Additionally, it will be worthwhile and educational to observe the healthcare system in a different country. I hope to take the experiences from the trip and apply what I’ve learned into my own practice as a nurse. I am sure that the healthcare system in the Netherlands is different than the USA, so perhaps I can learn new techniques and when I come back to the states for a job share the information I’ve learned with the hospitals I work with.
My personal mission statement: to live a life full of knowledge I will absorb all the aspects of every experience. To live a life full of respect I will respect myself and the choices of people around me. To live a live full of joy I find the little things that make me laugh and share in my relationships. To work as a nurse I will uphold the values of my patients and provide the best care to them. It is by these principles that I will work as a nurse and live as a person.
